Injuries put a dark cloud over training drills on Wednesday

First-round draft pick Nick Bosa went down on the first rep of the “move the ball” drill with a right leg injury. He got rolled up after a run play. Bosa was able to walk off the field under his own power. The rookie was taken for an MRI of the leg. Unconfirmed reports say Bosa has an ankle sprain. Even though a sprain is far less serious than what the injury could have been, it could keep Bosa from appearing in any of the Niners preseason games. Cornerback Jason Verrett also had to leave practice with an unspecified injury. He will also undergo an MRI.

Players who did not practice on Wednesday

  • Ronald Blair III (groin)
  • Dee Ford (knee)
  • Jamell Garcia-Williams (concussion protocol)
  • Joshua Garnett (finger)
  • Malcolm Smith (hamstring tightness)
  • K’Waun Williams (knee)
  • Jeff Wilson (calf)
  • Arik Armstead (calf)

Move the Ball Drills

  • Marquise Goodwin experienced a right leg injury during the first period of this drill. He was able to return four plays later.

Red Zone 11-on-11 drills

  • Jimmy Garoppolo was a perfect during the red zone 11-on-11 drills. Inside the 10-yard line, the QB was successful on each of his four TD passes. Two of those passes went to Trent Taylor and two went to George Kittle.

Garoppolo on the plans to play in preseason games two & three

  • “Whatever they’re willing to let me play. I always want to be out there with the guys. Whatever the coaches and the training staff come up with, I’ve trusted their plan this far, so they haven’t done me wrong yet.”

Jimmy G on practicing in Denver next week

  • “Yeah, I prefer it. Especially, I mean you see different looks, new defense. You get to this point in camp and the defense knowns our calls, we know their calls type of thing and it kind of becomes repetitive. But, whenever you get that chance, you know, juices kick up, the competition kicks up, it’s exciting.”

Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh on what he is looking for on Saturday night

  • “Execution, always. When you get to that first preseason game, for the most part you are looking at the second and third groups, the guys that are really the heart and soul of the team, the guys that make up that roster. I want to see those guys execute and compete. There’s a lot of guys competing for jobs on this team and you just want to see them play fast, execute and do things the right way that they’ve been doing since OTAs. Making sure that the lights aren’t too big for them and trying to evaluate everything with regards to the back half of the roster and those guys trying to make the team.”

ESPN 1320 is your official 49ers radio station in Sacramento. Kickoff for the game on Saturday night is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
