Listen to your team news NOW.

Coach Shanahan is not a fan of preseason games

During interviews prior to the game on Saturday, the 49ers head coach was asked about how many preseason games he thought would be the ideal. He responded saying two games. The coach indicated that two games would be enough competition to see who should be kept on the roster and who should be cut.

Shanahan also stated that he felt that what the coaching staff learned in training drills was just as important as what they would see in a preseason contest. As proved to be true after the action on Saturday, the potential for serious injury exists in game action where your opponents are trying to show to their coaches that they belong on the roster.

A 17-9 preseason win over the Cowboys can be costly

  • Tackle Shon Coleman suffered what appeared to be an ankle injury in the opening quarter and had to be carted off the field. On Sunday, Coleman had surgery to repair a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle. He will be placed on the Injured Reserve list. Shanahan told reporters on Sunday that the team will begin working out other options on Monday.
  • Linebacker Elijah Lee played 24 defensive snaps before injuring his hand. Lee had thumb surgery following the game and will be out of action for two weeks.
  • Defensive lineman D.J. Jones sprained a knee. He is now listed as week-to-week.
  • Raheem Mostert left the game in the first quarter of the game with Dallas. The running back suffered a head injury and has been placed in concussion protocol.
  • Safety Marcell Harris experienced a stinger but will ready for action this week.
  • Najee Toran hurt his hand during the game, but the X-rays came back negative which means he is available to practice.

Shanahan’s Sunday Update

  • The Niners head coach thought both Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard played pretty good games on Saturday night against the Cowboys.
  • Mullens went 11-for-17 passing for 105 yards. He had one TD along with one interception.
  • Beathard had a 13-for-17 night good for 141 yards and one TD. He also had one pass intercepted.
  • Shanahan was not pleased with either QB’s turnovers. He thought Mullens interception was a little bit worse. Shanahan said a backside LB was out of position – really out of position, busted coverage – Mullens did not see him.
  • The head coach did not see what he was looking for from his wide receivers. He said that he is looking for someone to step up and stand out. Shanahan stated he did not see any of the WR’s (rookies or veterans) do that on Saturday night.
  • Deebo Samuel was the 49ers leading receiver with 61 yards versus the Cowboys. Jalen Hurd had five targets, three receptions and 31 yards receiving. Shanahan said he hasn’t decided on how he is going to use his starting and reserve receivers in Denver yet.

The Officials certainly had a preseason game

  • There were 23 total penalties called for a total of 275 yards. The zebras should not be blamed for every penalty. The 49ers made some very sloppy plays that resulted in penalties. Some of the penalties called against the Niners were questionable – especially pass interference calls.
  • Also, if you thought the definition of a catch might have become better defined, think again. The calls by the last night’s officiating crew only proved that that no one really knows what a catch is in the NFL.
  • The pass interference review was used during the game. The results were less than satisfying, and it delays the game even more.

This week’s schedule

  • The 49ers will have Monday off.
  • The Niners will return to practice on Tuesday before heading to Denver for joint practices.
