Listen to your team news NOW.

There is a very good chance that 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left the Santa Clara practice facility on Wednesday and drove home to immediately begin enjoying his favorite adult beverage. To say “Jimmy G” had a bad day at the office would be an understatement.

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan talked about the situation

“He threw it to the wrong team five plays in a row. I was a defensive coach today, so I was pumped (that accounts for the total lack of sympathy). But no, the defense did great today and obviously he struggled … We hit a rough spot. I was happy for the defense, but the offense is going to have about a day and a half to think about it,” said Shanahan.

Who stepped up big on the defense?

  • Kwon Alexander tipped a pass intended for Ross Dwelley. The ball went in Jaquiski Tartt’s direction for the first interception of the session.
  • During the 11-on-11 drills, a deep pass intended for Matt Breida was picked when Tarvarius Moore jumped the route.
  • Dwelley became a victim again when Richard Sherman jumped in front of him and intercepted the pass.
  • On the first play of the red zone drills, a pass intended for Dante Pettis landed in the arms of defender Ahkello Witherspoon.
  • Dwelley became a victim again in the red zone as well. Tarvarius Moore picked a pass intended for the receiver in the red zone drills.
  • LB LaRoy Reynolds made a big play during the red zone drills. Reynolds broke up what looked like to be a TD pass from Nick Mullens to Kaden Smith in the end zone.
  • Solomon Thomas recorded a sack and had several pressures during the 11-on-11 drills.
  • Elk Grove’s Arik Armstead batted a Garoppolo pass on the first pass play of the two-minutes drills.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom on offense

  • Kendrick Bourne hauled in both of his targets in the end zone from Mullens during the two-minute drill.
  • Jalen Hurd was a perfect 4-for-4 on his targets Wednesday. He took a screen pass from Garoppolo in for a TD during the two-minute drills.
  • It was not all bad news for Ross Dwelley on Wednesday. He had back-to-back receptions in 11-on-11 drills. Garoppolo hit him up the sideline for a 30-yard gain. On the next play, he caught a screen pass good for a 15-yard gain.

Updated report from the M.A.S.H. Unit (if you don’t get it, Google it)

  • Returning to the team on Wednesday was C.J. Beathard (thumb) and Ronald Blair III (groin). Also returning to the field on Wednesday was free safety was Jimmie Ward. Ward came off the PUP list last week but has been limited to sideline conditioning work. He participated in individual work yesterday. Ward has not taken part in team drills yet.
  • Dre Greenlaw is still dealing with a stinger from Tuesday’s practice. That kept him in a blue non-contact jersey on Wednesday.
  • Joe Staley was pulled out of practice after experiencing soreness in the pectoral muscle. He will be re-evaluated in Denver.
  • TE Levine Toilolo has shoulder soreness. He is not expected to participate in the joint practices in Denver.
  • DT Julian Taylor has a stiff back and was held out of practice.

Rocky Mountain High

  • The Niners headed to Denver on Wednesday for joint practices with the Broncos at their practice facility in Englewood, Colorado. The teams will play a preseason game on Monday, August 19.
