Listen to your team news NOW.

Updates from 8-6-2019:

The 49ers made it clear again on Tuesday that QB Jimmy Garoppolo will not play in the first preseason game on Saturday versus Dallas. The plan is for Garoppolo to see playing time in the second and third preseason contests. Game four is almost always reserved for looking at players who are on the line for the final cuts and sitting key players that the team wants healthy for the regular season opener.

The big news coming out of the drills on Tuesday was the return of running back Jerick “Jet” McKinnon. McKinnon missed all of 2018 season due to an ACL injury. He was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. McKinnon will be limited to individual drills for now as the team eases him back into game shape.

  • DB Jimmie Ward has not been allowed to participate in a team practice to date. He is still sporting a blue jersey which denotes no contact and limited to being on the sidelines to work on his conditioning. The target is to have Ward ready for the joint training sessions with the Broncos that begin on August 16.
  • Did not practice list from Tuesday: K’Waun Williams (knee), Malcolm Smith (hamstring tightness), Jamell Garcia-Williams (concussion), Dee Ford (knee), Joshua Garnett (finger) and Jeff Wilson, Jr. (calf). Guard Mike Person received a veteran day off.
  • Receivers and cornerbacks faced off during red zone 1-on-1 drills:

  • Richard Sherman dominated the exercise. He did not have any receptions during the drill.
  • WR Kendrick Bourne made to the end zone on each of his attempts.
  • WR Deebo Samuel connected on all three of his targets.
  • DB D.J. Reed, Jr. won most of his reps including an outstretched pass break up (PBU) in the back of the end zone
  • Jimmy Garoppolo hit TE Ross Dwelley (from El Dorado Hills) for a big gain down the right sideline on the first passing play of the 11-on-11 drills.
  • During those same drills, back up QB Nick Mullens hit WR Trent Taylor who was wide open in the middle of the field for a long touchdown.
  • Top draft pick Nick Bosa continues to be the talk of Niners training camp. Players and reporters continue to speak in glowing terms of his work ethic and his skills. It will be interesting to see how much playing time he gets on Saturday.
  • Kyle Shanahan on second year TE Ross Dwelley: “Dwelley went from when he got here to he was on the outside looking in. We didn’t know if he would be a practice squad guy or not and towards the end of preseason last year, he showed some stuff to where we put him on our practice squad and he continued to ger better throughout the year in practice to where we ended up putting him up over, I think was (Tennessee Titans TE) Cole Wick at the time, and he earned that third tight end spot. He basically played Kittle every Wednesday, because Kittle was banged up a lot throughout the year and now this year, he’ a legit NFL player and he’ going to help us.”
