Niners Will Win the NFC West: That is What Nate Davis of USA Today Predicts

July 26, 2019 - 8:12 am

Nate Davis made the internet and Twitter come alive when he issued his annual NFL projections and had the 49ers winning the NFC West with a 10 – 6 record. Davis has the Rams and Seahawks tying for second with identical 9 – 7 records while the hapless Cardinals finish in the cellar going 3 – 13 on the season.

Listen to your team news NOW.

If that’s not wild enough, Adam Schein of has the Niners “on the bubble” for going to the playoffs with nine or 10 wins in 2019. Remember, San Francisco finished the 2018 season 4 – 12. Yes, Garoppolo is back and Nick Bosa has signed his rookie contract, but more than doubling the previous year’s win total? That seems like a tall order for any team.

As Niner fans prepare for the season, it is incumbent on them to remember that Garoppolo has only started 10 games in his entire NFL career. In other words, he has never started a full season. We aren’t trying to be “Debbie downers” but a dose of reality has to be served up with all of this optimism. Big turnarounds in the NFL do not come easy. Teams do not go from “worst to first” on a regular basis.

An 8 – 8 season for San Francisco would be a dramatic improvement for this team and put the organization on the right track to make the playoffs in 2020. My advice? Don’t bet the family farm in Vegas on the 49ers making the playoffs.

Speaking of odds

A check of shows that they are not in total agreement with me about the Niners this season. The consensus in “Sin City” right now is the 49ers win total will be over eight games (-120). In other words, you would have lay down $120 to win $100 on that bet. The odds makers are leaning in the direction of an eight-plus win season for San Francisco - interesting.

Rookies are in the fold

The 49ers have announced that defensive lineman Nick Bosa and wide receiver Deebo Samuel have signed four-year deals. With these signings, all eight of the Niners 2019 draft picks are under contract.

There had been some rumors that Samuel might hold out for a better contract. Fortunately for the Niners, they were just rumors.

See ya Mr. Brown

The 49ers have waived DB Alex Brown who they signed as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina State in May.

Undrafted free agents will sign three-year, $1.755 million contracts this season.

Major battle shaping up at wide receiver

The 49ers enter camp with eight WRs on the roster – Dante Pettis, Deebo Samuel, Jalen Hurd, Trent Taylor, Marquise Goodwin, Kendrick Bourne, Jordan Matthews and Richie James. There is probably room for a maximum of six wide receivers on the 53-man roster. While watching the preseason games, focus on the receivers to determine who you think the Niners should keep, and let us know who you like.
