Welcome to “the Show” kid

The Oakland Athletics gave LHP Jesus Luzardo his much-anticipated major league debut on Wednesday night in Houston. Luzardo was ranked the seventh best major league prospect by Baseball America. He is 21-346days old (it’s a baseball thing). The A’s acquired Luzardo from the Washington Nationals as a part of the trade that sent relief pitcher Sean Doolittle to the Nats.

Luzardo worked 3.0-innings giving up one run (earned) off one hit (home run). He walked none and struck out two batters. Luzardo set the Astros down in order in the seventh and eighth innings.

Jesus Luzardo is the first Peruvian-American to ever play in the major leagues.

The A’s last game versus a team with a winning record

The A’s will have 15 games left to play after tonight’s game in Houston. The four teams they will face – Texas, Kansas City, Los Angeles Angels and Seattle all have losing records. That should give the Athletics a real advantage as they head the down the final stretch playing for Wild Card Spot #1.

The A’s do have a battle on their hands tonight as they will have to face the Astros and Justin Verlander (18-5, 2.52). Verlander is the “favorite” to win the Cy Young Award this season. Oakland will counter with RHP Homer Bailey (12-8, 4.87).
