Who are the BIG play teams on first down?

A big play is defined as a run of 10-plus yards or a pass of 20-plus yards.

The top five teams so this season are:

  1. San Francisco 49ers – 49 big plays
  2. Buffalo Bills – 46 big plays
  3. Tennessee Titans – 45 big plays
  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 44 big plays
  5. A tie: Baltimore Ravens & Houston Texans 42 big plays

Food for thought:  A win in New Orleans this Sunday would be the 49ers third win over an NFC South team this season with one game remaining with Atlanta of the NFC South on December 15th.

It’s Mostert Time

  • Raheem Mostert set career highs for carries (19) and rushing yards (146) in the game with Baltimore last Sunday. Not bad for an RB who looked like he might never see the field again after his early season fumbles.
  • Mostert is averaging 5.86 yards per carry this season which ranks him second in the NFL among qualifying players. Lamar Jackson is first and Mostert first among RBs.
  • Mostert also plays on Special Teams. He is the leading tackler on Special Teams with 10 and has one fumble recovery.

Why the Niners Defense should make you feel better

  • DL DeForest Buckner recorded a sack last week and is aiming for his third game in a row on the road with a sack.
  • DL Arik Armstead has 4.5 sacks and one Forced Fumble in his last four games.
  • DL Nick Bosa ranks second in the NFL with 14 Tackles For Loss this season.
  • LB Fred Warner led the 49ers with 11 tackles and one Pass Defended in the game versus the Ravens.
  • CB Richard Sherman will try to make it three games in a row with NFC South teams with an interception.
  • DB Jimmie Ward is looking to make this week’s game his fifth in a row with a Pass Defended.

How does Vegas see this game going down?

These are the numbers that are being posted by William Hill. I am using their numbers because many of our listeners use them. These are their numbers as posted on Friday, December 12, 2019 at 4:45 PM and should not be used for any final investments. Odds are dynamic and change literally by the minute.

  • Point Spread: The Saints are the favorite –2.5 points
  • The Over/Under: 44.5 points
  • The Money Line: San Francisco +120 / New Orleans –140

I also like to check out the predictions of the folks at FiveThirtyEight.com. They are not a gambling house. They are some of the biggest “stat geeks” in the world, and I like their work. FiveThirtyEight gives the Saints a 60% chance of winning the game. Using their “ELO System” (if you want to know more – go look it up on their site), they make New Orleans the favorite –2.5 points.

So, it’s coffee, mimosas, beignets and football this Sunday morning. Have a great weekend.

Don’t forget, the 49ers pregame show starts at 9:00 AM on ESPN 1320 and the game kicks off just after 10:00 AM with Greg Papa calling the play-by-play.
