The Washington Nationals on Saturday placed ace pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the injured list with a nerve issue in his throwing hand.

Strasburg, who exited his Friday start against the Orioles in the first inning after throwing just 16 pitches, will be out at least 10 days with what the team called carpal tunnel neuritis.

Strasburg could be seen shaking his hand in discomfort while laboring through the brief outing, a red flag for manager Dave Martinez.

"I didn't like what I saw," Martinez said. "I told him then and there, 'Hey, I don't want you to continue right now.' I talked to him after he came out, and I appreciated him trying to gut it out. But I don't want this to become a bigger issue if something else goes wrong."

The start was only the second for Strasburg, the 2019 World Series MVP, who opened the shortened season on the injured list due to the same hand condition.

"I don't want to see him out there shaking his hand in pain," Martinez said. "So I think the best thing right now is to kinda shut him down and see if we can get this straightened out."
