Andrew Benintendi's nightmare season has come to an end

Andrew Benintendi’s season is over.

The Red Sox outfielder was placed on the 45-day disabled list due to a rib injury suffered a rib injury suffered on Aug. 11.

It completes a nightmare 2020 season for Benintendi that saw him go 4-for-52 with 11 walks and no home runs before the injury.

"I talked to Benny yesterday. I know Chaim (Bloom) also did. I just asked him about what he was thinking for the rest of the year," said Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke. "After I had talked to (trainer) Brad (Pearson) from the medical end and wondering if we get this guy back are we pushing him to play a few games and is that important? Same thing talking with Chaim about it. Benny understood. He didn't really want to push things past where he could re-injure himself. In everybody's opinion we thought this was the best way to do it. Chaim, Brad, myself and Benny. There's really not a reason to force him to get back to the end of the year knowing if you're pushing him that you can cause something else to happen."

Replacing Benintendi on the 40-man roster is Christian Arroyo, who has been called up from the team's alternate site and will get a good look at second base for the remainder of the season.
